Discussions vs e-mail lists
both of these are really excellent tools for dialogue, but they have their strengths and weaknesses.
We often get asked which is better, the discussions tab or e-mail list? Here's our take.
The discussions tab in ProjectSpaces is great for a hierarchical threaded discussion forum that allows users to post topics and threads to each topic. It tends to work well with larger groups of people who have lots of "conversations" in need a web-based archive that preserves these in a very nice format. Users can subscribe via RSS to be notified of new topics and posters can push e-mail notifications to users of their choice. However, to post you must login to ProjectSpaces.
The advantage of e-mail lists is that no login is required and users can post questions and answers directly from their e-mail client such as Outlook. E-mail lists tend to get more traffic and are probably the best choice for groups of busy people who won't take the time to log in to a web-based forum. The e-mail list also has a nice e-mail archive but it is not hierarchical like the discussion archive. We usually tell people to try an e-mail list first unless they have a really big group that needs a well structured archive.
